To: mike @ boobaz.net Subject: Espresso Roma Hi Mike I worked some years ago at the Espresso Roma in Montecito (Santa Barbara) which closed in 1997 due to differences with the owner of the property (so I heard). Roma has still 3 shops in SB - the one in Isla Vista (UCSB), one in Downtown Santa Barbara as well Cafe Siena which also belongs to Sandy. There are some stores in the Bay Area like in Emeryville, then one in Davis as well on in San Diego. I can recall that the pay checks were from a company called Pacific Roasting Company or something similar. I actually tried as well to find more about the chain - I had a wonderful time working at the Roma despite being lowly paid. I hope this little information might helps you a little further. Roma's are definitely great places to hang out and relax or study. From my Seattle visit (a town that a was totally fascinated) I only knew Cafe Paradiso vis-a-vis (former pace of) REI. I must say that I'm as well surprised that Roma has not a homepage with all the locations etc. I talked once with Sandy... I was thinking about applying to a college in Baltimore (who the hell wants to go to Baltimore.. ha, ha) and asked him if he does not want to open on the East Coast some places like Baltimore... and since I had already a degree in Hotel Management from Switzerland where I'm native from I could manage... His reply was if I could bring a good location why not... But it seems like he is not that interested in opening coffee shops in other areas than the West. However, Sandy was opening in the beginning of 1997 in Santa Barbara a Juice Bar combined with a News Stand.. Though I never could find out anything more... the location was on Motorway Dr. or so... next to the Santa Barbara Roasting Company... Ok that's for now. Best regards, Daniel
